<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>President Warne and I have been saying
constantly that we can’t believe our mission is coming to an end. We know the time is short and we have been
having final meetings and saying good-bye for over a month. But to think that we will actually be getting
on the plane on Tuesday night after turning over the mission to the Harrises is
still hard to comprehend.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> As this will be my final post, I
would like to say how grateful I am to those of you who read the blog. I am so grateful for the chance I have had to
be a missionary along with your son or daughter. Jesus Christ is at the head of our church and
we feel His guidance in missionary work as the missionaries work hard to find,
teach and baptize.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> It has been an amazing three years,
filled with laughter, tears, frustration at times and much joy. I have a strong testimony of the truth of the
Gospel, that missionary work is crucial and that people everywhere are prepared
by God to hear and accept the gospel. I
am grateful for the blessing I have had of learning a new language and living in a
country as beautiful as Chile with wonderful, faithful saints. It has also been a marvelous experience to serve a full time mission as a couple. We have grown closer during our mission and look forward to the next one (after we reconnect with family, of course!).<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> We turn the leadership of the
mission over the Harrises with confidence and faith that they will make
necessary changes, that they will love our missionaries and that the work of
the Lord will continue here in the Chile Rancagua mission. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

members<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>Today we attended for the last time in a little
branch in Peralillo. There were four of
us in Relief Society. The branch
president’s wife taught the lesson and also taught Gospel Doctrine. The primary consisted of two grandchildren
brought by one of the hermanas and then the teacher. I’m listing all of these facts for two
reasons:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> First is to say that even though we
have spent the last three years in Chile serving and doing our best, much
remains to be done. I have joked with
President that we have been like a finger in water. Once it is pulled out, no effect is
left. However, the Lord has the long
view and we labor in His vineyard under His direction. The missionaries in Peralillo have a
responsibility to support the branch as much as they do to find and teach
investigators.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> The second reason is to show the
faithfulness of these members. It must
be hard to come every Sunday and know there will be so few, but they do
it. The branch has activities and
invites everyone. We attended their
Relief Society celebration at which there were more nonmembers than
members. We have a great admiration for
these members and those in many other small units in our mission or anywhere.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> We will take home with us the
memories of the wonderful people of Chile, the hard work they do and we pray
that the Harris’ will make a lot more progress than we did.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> For pictures this week, I've included some from the zone conferences we had this week: a group picture, sisters who helped me in the kitchen, lunch of grilled chicken sandwiches, musical numbers, and also one of President with the office elders.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>After a rainy and rather dreary week, today the
sun is shining and everything looks fresh and clean. One of the things we’ve had to get used to in
Chile is that while the trees lose their leaves in the fall and the grapevines
are bare, the hills are green and beautiful since it is the rainy season. The dead corn has been plowed under and the
farmers are preparing the fields for the next crop.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> We always worry about our
missionaries when it is rainy and cold.
Did they remember to take their umbrellas? Do they have rain boots and a warm coat? Sometimes it is hard to be admitted to houses
because people say, “Don’t you know it is raining? You should go home.” But they are valiant about continuing to work
hard whether it is cold in the winter or hot in the summer. The houses here, including the missionary
apartments are neither heated nor cooled.
We provide a heated mattress pad and blankets for each bed and a small
heater for each companionship. In the
summer, they have fans to provide some relief from the heat. However, very few missionaries complain;
instead they adjust and keep going.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> We admit to the missionaries that
missionary life is hard, as they know for themselves. But we also tell them about the rewards for
serving a full-time mission, which include, among others, converting themselves
and others, forming life-long friendships, building a foundation for faithful
service in the church and confirming their discipleship of Jesus Christ. When they can focus on these eternal
blessings and their purpose to preach repentance and baptize converts, the
temporary physical hardships become bearable and fade away. We are eternally grateful for these young
people who have changed our lives by their strength, example and testimony.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Throughout our mission we have traveled every Sunday to attend church in
one of the branches of our three districts, except for stake and general
conference Sundays. We have enjoyed a
Primary program presented by the only 2 Primary age girls and the
presidency. We have visited on Fast
Sundays where every person in attendance bears testimony every month. We have listened to talks given by faithful
members who have many different challenges and come from many backgrounds.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It has been a privilege to come to know these members and see their
efforts to serve and obey and sustain the church in their home area. Many branches do not have very many
priesthood holders which brings additional challenges. Our missionaries often
serve as branch clerks or counselors or with the young men and the sisters
often help with primary or young women.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In most of the branches, the missionaries also teach Sunday School (Gospel
Principles), often without prior notice.
They also often speak in Sacrament meeting. Even though we have learned to know and love
the members, as the missionaries serve and work in the branches and wards they
form strong bonds with them. The members
return that love and serve as they give lunch to the missionaries, go out
teaching with them, welcome their investigators and attend baptisms. They are flexible about accepting missionary
changes: saying a fond good-bye to those leaving and welcoming new arrivals.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">None of us are perfect so occasionally problems arise, but overall
members and missionaries work together to live the gospel and advance the work
here in Chile and we are grateful to be part of it and also for the friends we
have made among the members.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>This week we finished interviews for the last
time, definitely a bittersweet experience.
Since President won’t be interviewing these missionaries when they go
home we decided to increase the time a little in order to have a little more
one on one time. While they are waiting
for their interviews I have tried to encourage all the Latin missionaries in
their English studies and help them remember what a great opportunity they have
to learn it on their mission. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Next week we will have our last
cambio or transfer. We have 23 going
home and 18 coming this time and in July the difference is even bigger. The new president and wife will have the
opposite challenge as when we came. They
will adjust numbers and close sectors, while we struggled every time with
finding housing and sectors for large groups.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> It has strengthened my testimony to
realize that the work goes on even as the workers and situations change. We are grateful for the members here in Chile
who help out by giving lunch to the missionaries, going out to teach lessons
with them, giving them references and friendshipping investigators who come to
church. Each of us can help the work of
salvation by doing those same things wherever we may be. There are missionaries in almost every part
of the world and we all have the same goal: to invite others to come to Christ
and be baptized. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> I invite you to do something this
week to help the missionaries in your area.
They will appreciate it and you will be blessed for it.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>Over a year ago, I posted about the countries
represented in our mission. Today I did
a recount because I thought it would be interesting to see how or if things
have changed. One big change is the
numbers of missionaries we have. In
October, 2013 we had 290 missionaries, but since then we have gradually
decreased in size until today where we have 191. It seems like everything should be a lot
easier with 100 fewer missionaries but we haven’t noticed a decrease in any of
our activities.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span lang="ES-CL">Here is the
breakdown: Argentina-14, Bolivia-3,
Brazil-15, Canada-2, Chile-8, Colombia-7, Ecuador-10, Guatemala-2, Korea-1,
Mexico-8, Nicaragua-1, Panama-1, Paraguay-1, Peru-16, United States-99,
Uruguay-3. </span>Obviously, 15 different countries represent 15
different cultures and even changes in language usage. Even within countries cultural differences
exist. I feel this is one of the many
blessings of a mission; the missionaries can learn that we are all children of
Heavenly Father, trying to live the gospel and invite the people in Chile to
come to Christ. I’ve included below the
paragraph from the earlier post so you may compare if you like: (we still have
eleven from Arizona:))<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span style="background: white; color: #464646; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
Right now we have 242 missionaries, or we will again after Tuesday when
27 arrive. 181 are elders and we have 62 sisters, which is way down from
our peak when we had 104 sisters. </span><span lang="ES-CL" style="background: white; color: #464646; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Missionaries come
from Argentina-8, Bolivia-1, Brazil-10, Chile-11, Colombia-7, Ecuador-4, El
Salvador-1, Guatemala-3, Korea-1, Mexico-9, Nicaragua-1, Panama-2, Paraguay-2,
Peru-30, Spain-3 and Uruguay-4. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span></span><span style="background: white; color: #464646; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Utah, of course is well represented as is Idaho. We
have 11 from Arizona-the same as from Chile plus three more who will arrive on
Tuesday.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> As we look ahead to the missionaries
coming in the next two transfers, the numbers of Latinos will increase because
few Americans are coming. The pendulum
has moved back and forth several times during our mission but we gladly accept
whoever comes because missionaries are called of God no matter what their
country or language. We are grateful for
the chance we’ve had to learn about the people and cultures of other countries.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>By the end of our mission we will have had
about 600 missionaries come here to Rancagua, Chile. That is am amazing number when I think back
about individuals. The missionaries ask
us if we can remember everyone, and unfortunately that answer is no, unless we
see a picture. Some of the early ones
who left right after we got here are not as familiar as those we had for their
whole time. We are anxious to stay in
touch with as many as possible and President already spends a lot of time
corresponding with former missionaries; answering questions and giving
encouragement.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> This weekend we enjoyed visiting
with two of our returned missionaries; both are married and one couple is
expecting, while the other has a 4 month old baby. A few weeks ago we visited another couple
with a new baby. It is a wonderful
privilege to see them, see their progress and know they are on the right path
of temple marriage and starting families.
Plus those babies are very cute! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> When we have our final testimony
meeting each change we often ask the missionaries to remember us and keep in touch. Even though it won’t happen with everyone, we
are looking forward to many years of wedding invitations and baby announcements
and visits from “our” missionaries. This
is a blessing we didn’t know about in the beginning, but now we look forward to
watching their progress as part of a unique family—our returned missionaries
and us.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>Today we attended a stake conference in Curicó. After today’s conference we only have two
more before we leave; one in Tupahue stake and the other in Talca. Even though we are close to the end I am
still nervous about whether or not I will speak and if I do whether anyone will
understand my Spanish.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> On the other hand, it is so great to
see all the missionaries assigned to a stake or district when we go to
conference. We are able to greet each
one of them, check up on a few who have been sick or had other challenges, and
President usually has at least a couple of interviews; this time he did four. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> President has become very good at
understanding what needs to be said in each of the three meetings and giving a
talk based on those needs. I always have
a talk prepared for the Sunday morning meeting but usually bear my testimony
instead because the time is short. It
means I can keep the talk ready for a long timeJ<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> It is also a real privilege to be
with the members. We have gotten to know
many wonderful people here in Chile and recognize many others by their smile
and warm greeting every time we see them.
During our mission we have learned to admire the Saints here because of
their faithfulness, often under difficult circumstances. We appreciate their friendliness to us and their
generous support of the missionaries by feeding them and going out teaching
with them. However, there is still a lot
of work to be done and we know good things will continue to happen even when we
are gone.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

cambios. Transfers happen every six
weeks and it is a time of change and sometimes even upheaval since missionaries
go home, companionships change and missionaries must move to new apartments or
houses. Transfers are another way a
missionary must adapt along with a new language and the mission culture among
others.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Today I’m going to focus on missionaries
who are finishing their mission. If
asked how much time they have left, they make a face because they don’t like to
think about it. In the beginning,
eighteen months or two years seemed like forever, but the time passes so
rapidly that it doesn’t seem long before they receive what we call “trunky
papers”. The information from these
papers tells the missionaries what they need to know before leaving the mission
and also ask what airport is best. We
encourage them to work hard and stay focused until the very last day, but it
can be hard to do.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> I have mentioned before that
missionaries leaving have a workshop on self sufficiency, go with us to the
temple and have an afternoon to buy mementos.
They also bear their testimony
for the “last” time many times, say goodbye in their current ward or branch,
write notes to be given to their converts or former companions and wonder how
they will fit everything into their suitcases.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> For the most part they are nervous,
because mission life is well-regulated and now they face major decisions about
school, work, and getting married. It is
like leaving a shelter and going back out into the storm. They have not focused on their family during
their mission but now the time is very short until they will see them again,
also an adjustment. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> For our part, we are sad because we
have enjoyed getting to know them and serving together. We know it is time and are grateful for the
growth we see in them during their mission.
We always tell them, please stay in touch and let us know how things are
going, which many do. It is our great
privilege to have these amazing young people, watch them serve the Lord as full-time
missionaries then send them home to do great things.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Last
week I posted about the training we do for the missionaries which I hope you
enjoyed but it seemed dry. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>This
week I would like to share our schedule for last week which was a little crazy,
but you can judge.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Monday
morning<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>we had our regular office
meeting which includes the finance and history couple, the couple in charge of
apartments, the assistants, secretaries and us. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Its purpose is to coordinate and
discuss the temporal side of running the mission. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Before that meeting we always meet
with the mission nurse, to go over our concerns about various
missionaries. Monday night<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>we
hosted self sufficiency training for the missionaries who leave this week, and six
sisters stayed for the night.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>On
Tuesday morning<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>we left<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>at 7 a.m.<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>for the temple. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>After the session and lunch we ran a
few errands before returning home. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>President
is using any available time to work on transfers. Wednesday was district
meeting: we are trying, between the assistants and us, to meet with every
district to make sure the training we did last week for the leaders is being
passed on; so we drove to Talca for those two zones. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>We also took the nurse and her husband
in order to finish giving the flu vaccinations. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Thursday we attended the district
meetings in Curico and then took the current assistants and the assistant who
is leaving, to lunch. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Assistants
usually go back into the field for their last transfer, but this is a small way
to show appreciation for their hard work before they go home so we meet them and
go out.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Friday
we held the five week training at our house for the missionaries who came in
March and their trainers. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Since
the housekeeper is out sick, a senior couple and some of the sister
missionaries really saved me by helping cook, serve and clean up the lunch. Saturday we went to the grocery store in
preparation for next week's meals (transfers), packed and headed to Santa Cruz
for the district conference and a baptism. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>We went by Chepica on the way to
deliver plastic bins since it has been raining hard; their roof has a serious
leak and it is a complicated repair.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>And
that was our week--this week will be busy also, but that is why we are here and
we are so grateful for the opportunity to serve and be with the missionaries.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Every third month our focus is on
specialized training. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This means that
President decides in what area the missionaries need to improve.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The training format can be also be done
however he feels is best.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We have tried
a variety of methods; two times we held workshops, which the missionaries enjoyed,
although teaching one class 35 times can be a little monotonous.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Other times we have had zone conference type
meetings.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This month, because of the
transfer date right in the middle, which makes it difficult to get to each
zone, we came up with a new plan:</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Last week we held three meetings
which included the zone leaders, district leaders and coordinadoras.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>President and the assistants each presented a
concept, then everyone practiced.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
idea is that the leaders will return to the weekly district meetings each
Wednesday in April to teach and practice these concepts, which includes
learning to improve teaching methods by presenting concepts more simply and in
shorter lessons.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Investigators do not
need an hourlong lesson each time nor do they need a complex and hard to
understand lesson.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Investigators need to
understand the reasons why the lessons are important, and why commitment to
change is crucial.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They need to have
spiritual experiences and be able to understand when they are feeling the
influence of the spirit.</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: "century gothic";"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Now for the rest of the month we and
the assistants will split up to attend all the district meetings to observe how
the teaching is going and help with the practices.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hopefully by relying on the leaders to train
the missionaries, everyone will be able to learn and improve.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>Holidays are very different from those spent
with our families at home. We try to
make Christmas a special experience for missionaries, but Easter is more about
being grateful for the resurrection and all its promises; the Easter bunny is
easy to give up. Still it can be hard to
be away from family and family traditions, so I decided to make a list of
things for which I’m grateful. I shared
part of the list with our missionaries in my weekly message and challenged them
to write a list of their own. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> I am not going to repeat that list
here, but I can testify that I am extremely blessed and right now a big part of
my blessings are to be here in the mission field with our wonderful
missionaries. Hopefully as you write
them this week you can include some of the blessings for which you are
grateful, which I know includes your missionary and his service. I know that will uplift them, reassure them
they are an important part of your life and show support for the great work
they are doing here in the mission.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> I am very grateful for this
opportunity to serve a mission here in Chile, with the blessing of knowing and
serving with amazing young people who have strong testimonies, the desire to
share them with others, and the ability to be worthy representatives of Jesus
Christ. Together we are working to
hasten the work of the Lord by inviting people to come unto Him. ¡Feliz Pascua! Happy Easter!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>This week I would like to share a great experience
we had. First, though, this week was
zone conferences; we held four from Tuesday to Friday. Since we usually combine zones for these
conferences, we have three more to finish by the end of March. We have enjoyed them and hopefully the
missionaries have also enjoyed them and received information to help them be
better missionaries.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> One afternoon we went to an
appointment with two elders from Santa Cruz.
The young man they are teaching had decided he needed to change his life
before he even heard of the missionaries and had stopped smoking and drinking. The purpose of the lesson we participated in
was to help him learn about the importance of baptism. He had said he wanted to be baptized in June
to make sure his family understood and supported his decision, but during the
lesson, after we read and discussed scriptures from Alma, the elders asked him
to be baptized on March 26 and he agreed.
It was a privilege for us to share in that special moment. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That is the nucleus of what we do—invite people to share our belief in
the Savior and join with us through baptism. Through all the discouraging moments of
slammed doors or uninterested contacts, an experience like this renews
enthusiasm, and helps us realize that the Lord has prepared people to receive
the gospel and through the Spirit we can find and teach them. This young man will not only be able to move
further along the straight and narrow path, but also will be a strength in the
branch. Also, hopefully his family will
follow his example and also join the church.
I testify of the importance of missionary work as part of the work of
salvation and I love being a missionary!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This week’s pictures are from leadership council, and zone
conferences. The three senior sisters
are doing a great service by repairing the elders’ and sisters’ clothing. The last picture is from a RS birthday celebration we attended in Peralillo.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>Today we drove to Santa Cruz to watch a
broadcast from Salt Lake presided over by President Nelson. Elder Soares conducted and spoke, Bishop
Davies of the Presiding Bishopric and Sister Durham from the General Primary
Presidency also spoke. President Nelson
spoke last and spoke in Spanish which was very cool. When he visited for the Rancagua stake conference,
he also gave that talk in Spanish. It is
amazing that at 90 with all of his responsibilities he is still able to work on
learning a new language.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> I am also amazed by the technology
involved in broadcasting from Salt Lake City to 77 stakes and 18 districts here
in Chile. The signal was so clear we
could have been in the same room. When
Elder Bednar was here he said that some day we will look back at this type of
broadcast as being very elementary and amazing things will happen that will
allow contact between far-flung areas of the Church. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> The subjects of the talks were very
simple and direct, including President Nelson who focused on obeying the
commandments. It is what the
missionaries teach their investigators as presented in Preach My Gospel but it
is always good to have a reminder that we have our own personal obligations. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Here’s a brief summary of mission
events last week: Monday was the final
lunch and testimony for 14 go homers; Tuesday we welcomed, trained and sent off
to their areas 18 new missionaries, including one who returned after being ill;
Wednesday was district meeting; Thursday we had mission leadership council and
Friday was a training meeting for new leaders.
This week we start zone conferences for March so be sure to tune in for
that report next week:)</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>This weekend we had the opportunity to attend
three baptisms, which we love to do. The
first was in Buin, 45 minutes north of us on Saturday morning; the second was
here in Rancagua on Saturday evening at a chapel 5 minutes from our house and
the third was in Curicó right after church about 1 hour and 10 minutes to the
south. In the first, three of our
hermanas sang beautifully “I am a Child of God”, in the second, two elders and
a member did a musical number and today in Curicó the primary children
sang. All three were great and really
added to the spirit of the baptism.
President gave a talk on baptism today since the assigned person couldn’t
be there.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> The reason we are here in Chile is
to invite people to come to Christ. It
is always amazing to see the happiness in their eyes as they come up out of the
water. We love to feel that spirit of joy each
time we attend. Many missionaries who
are called to South American expect that they will easily baptize every
weekend, but that isn’t the case, at least not in our mission. Because it doesn’t happen that way, sometimes
they are discouraged about hard it is to find, teach and baptize. We remind them that if they are obedient and
diligent, they will be blessed even if they don’t see the effects of their
efforts while they are in that area or even during their mission.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Serving a mission is challenging and
definitely requires hard work and often leaving their comfort zone. However, the knowledge that they have,
through the Spirit, helped an investigator through the conversion process and
to the waters of baptism plus the happiness they feel “vale la pena” as we
often say, which means it's totally worth the effort. We all feel joy when a new member has joined
the fellowship of Christ, and we are grateful each time we are able to attend a
baptism. </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Here are this week's pictures: a baptism from last week, two of our great couples at the temple this week, and the rest are from the last day of interviews. I promise, no more apartment pictures!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>This week I’m going to write about Elder and
Sister Bednar’s visit to our area, South America South. They arrived last Friday, February 19. That night the mission presidents and wives
and stake presidents and wives from Santiago and us were invited to a light
dinner and meeting. I really appreciate
the fact that they were willing to meet that night since I know how exhausted I
am after traveling from the U.S. Afterward,
we had the privilege of shaking hands and were amazed that Elder Bednar
remembered the circumstances of our mission call and that he had set apart
President Warne.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> During this week, the Bednars traveled
between Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, held at least one meeting per day and
inspired thousands with their counsels and teaching. I mean that literally, because thanks to
technology, 60,000 youth were together on Tuesday night. Wednesday morning all the missionaries in the area met in various stake and district centers for a training session and 90,000 young adults
met on Wednesday night. Thursday’s
meeting was for bishoprics, branch presidencies and stake presidencies.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> Saturday morning the 27th,
we participated in and enjoyed a three hour broadcast with the mission
presidents and wives from our area as well as the area seventies and some of
their wives. It was incredible for us to
realize we were sitting in our dining room at the mission home while we could
watch Elder Bednar and Elder Gonzalez the area president in Uruguay as they
were directing the meeting, as well as hear input from everyone else.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> We feel very inspired by what we
learned and we are anxious to share both the information and the challenges
with the missionaries. For example, he
taught that we need to act and not be objects to be acted upon. One way that works is that investigators must
search for themselves, with the assistance of the missionaries and through the
Holy Ghost to gain a testimony.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>We have had the happy privilege each of the
last two Saturdays’ of driving to the airport to pick up a new couple coming to
serve in our mission. One of the couples
is going to work in the office on finances and many of the other issues that
keep the mission running. Sister C_____
of the second couple will serve as the nurse and her husband will assist her,
help with the English program and do many other tasks that help the
missionaries. They will also go out and
teach with the missionaries, feed them lunch, love them and support them in
their missionary life.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> It is wonderful when we see them
come out the door from customs. We know
they are exhausted from the long flight, but they are smiling and ready for
their new adventure in a foreign country far from home. At least in distance, that is. We are all grateful for the technology that
allows us to stay in close communication with our families. Both weeks we returned to the mission home
and ate lunch with the other couples. None
of the four speak Spanish really, but they have chosen to accept the call to
serve here in Chile. I admire and
appreciate them so much!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> The missionaries also appreciate and
love the senior couples. They know these
couples work hard to support them so they can fulfill their calling of
preaching the gospel to the people of Chile.
The senior couples are also a great example of strong marriages from
whom the young missionaries learn that it is possible for a couple to stay
together, stay strong in the gospel and eventually serve a mission. They are a great example for their own
families, especially grandchildren as they, too, get ready to serve missions.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> I can’t say enough about the impact
these couples have both here and at home, but I can express my gratitude and
say Welcome to Chile!!</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>This week I would like to talk about the interviews
we are doing right now. I heard about
another mission where they interviewed all the missionaries in their houses so
we decided to try it. It has been an
interesting (and still going on) process.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> We have about 90 companionships but
some houses or apartments have four elders or sisters so we have around 78
houses. I say houses but it is a
combination of houses, duplexes and apartments.
It is turning out to be a challenge to find each house and keep to the
schedule—one day we drove around for 1 ½ hours before giving up--but we are
really enjoying seeing the missionaries in their home environment.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Part of our responsibility as
mission president and wife is to make sure the houses are in good repair and
that they are kept clean. Fortunately we
have a couple who work tirelessly in that capacity, but we wanted to see for
ourselves and although we have visited many places, there are still many
we haven’t yet seen. We expect that when
we come they will have made the effort to make sure their place is clean; that
has happened for the most part. If it
isn’t we help them realize they need to make changes:) Also if they need things fixed or replaced I make a list to pass on to the couple over that.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> The best part of doing interviews
this way is the one on one or small group time I can have with the missionaries
while they are waiting to talk with President.
I have enjoyed visiting with them about their families, what they like
about Chile, what they would like to do after the mission and other similar topics. If they are Latin missionaries,
then I challenge them to speak with me in English and I find out what or how
they are studying to learn. They often speak better than they give themselves credit for. They ask me how my Spanish is and I tell them they have to evaluate it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> We have been to Buin, Curicó, Santa
Cruz, Licanten, Pichilemu and Rancagua, to name a few towns and next week we will go
to Talca and Constitución. By then we will have done all but a few of the
sectors and hopefully we can finish up in the last week of February. Interviews
are always enjoyable yet challenging; this time even more so, but I’m really
glad we decided the chance to see every missionary in their home environment. </span><o:p></o:p></div>

It has definitely been bittersweet because it was so great to see the friends we have made during our time as mission president, yet sad because we aren't sure when we will see many of them again.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;">We stayed at the Sheraton in the center of Buenos Aires. We had a great view of the city, clock tower and River Plata from our room. We always enjoy the time we have to visit and share experiences with the other presidents and wives and eat delicious food. We only had time for one short walk but it was nice to see a tiny part of the city.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;">The training is always inspiring and this time was the same. We always take home lots of great information to share with the missionaries which we hope will help all of us to do a better job of being missionaries. We want to do better at finding and teaching. Also we want to follow focus on the directive we received from the worldwide training broadcast of January 20: teach repentance and baptize converts. We know we will be blessed as we listen to the council we receive, teach and train our missionaries and work really hard.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px;">Also this week we did interviews in two more zones, enjoyed lunch with a returned missionary and her mother, went to district meeting and generally kept busy! Thanks for reading.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It is hard to believe I have been back in Chile for over a week,
although we certainly had enough activities to fill the week. We held the final dinner and testimony meeting
on Monday for 14 missionaries going home, welcomed 7 more on Tuesday, attended
a district meeting on Wednesday, met with 42 missionaries for mission
leadership council on Thursday and started interviews for February by
interviewing the missionaries of a Rancagua zone. I’ll share more on that subject next week,
but today I would like to talk about the experience we had Friday night.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Chimbarongo is a small town about one hour and 10 minutes south of
Rancagua. Even though about 800 members
live there, branch attendance each Sunday is usually between 35-40 people. We have two sets of missionaries who work
hard to reactivate inactive members and find new investigators, but they also
are a wonderful support for the branch.
Just outside of town on either side of the highway is a row of shops
selling all kinds of wicker from baskets to lawn furniture.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That information is all background to let you know that Chimbarongo is a
great place. Friday night we attended a
wedding there, our first since we have been here in Chile. When we arrived we saw that chairs had been
set up in front of the church with many of the branch members seated, along
with family members. The civil official
was also ready and waiting. Shortly
after, the bride arrived in a beautiful dress and the ceremony began. It was a gorgeous summer night with just a
little breeze and a perfect temperature.
The ceremony was nice and after finishing, the official asked for testimonials
from the audience; a few people expressed appreciation for the couple and the
event.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After pictures we all went into the church where they had set up the
food tables and after a short welcome by a friend we all enjoyed little
sandwiches, assorted tarts and cakes, a pudding topped with fruit, crackers and
soda. I really enjoyed visiting with the
two elders and two sisters and we were glad we had gone. I know they are looking forward to the time
they can be sealed in the temple, but are happy they have taken the first step.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>Hello, I’m back in Chile and back to writing
this blog post. I really appreciate
President helping by posting on the Sunday I was sick and again last Sunday
while I was home in Utah for our daughter’s wedding.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> The wedding and reception went
beautifully for which I’m very grateful.
Thanks to technology President was able to talk with many who came to
the reception. I told the missionaries
that I would like each of them to have a similar wonderful experience when they
marry but also that they definitely should not be thinking about that right
now!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> President and I are happy to be
reunited. After 2 ½ years of constantly
working together it was really hard to spend time apart. As I’ve said before, and as President often
tells the missionaries, definitely one of the blessings of serving a mission is
the chance to work closely together as a couple. Our 39th anniversary is coming up
and we are very grateful for our marriage and the uncountable blessings we have
received because of it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> This is transfer week in the mission
and all the missionaries found out last night whether they will be going or
staying and whether they will have a new companion or stay with the current one. Many are happy, many are nervous and a few
are disappointed with the announcement.
However, it is up to them how this new transfer will go. We encourage them to work hard and ensure
success with whatever companion and in whatever sector they may find themselves. It is one of the many and varied benefits of
serving a mission: to learn to adapt to new places and people and be able to
get along. It is a challenge
to have to deal with an unhappy or lazy companion, but the Lord is ready to
help and inspire in every situation. It is
a great opportunity to prepare for some of the challenges of marriage--we want each of our missionaries to have the same blessings that we do and look forward to hearing about their eternal companions!</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="border-image: none;">
During our specialized training for this quarter we took time after lunch <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipC_v101KxK0yLSriPmVU7PF4J6dZL_DeK-RHUfja3BOsa9a2JSj9hBGyBUV_F2q8w3VXmTYqhE5Quf24v4RfzrJUWM0rHemT0AOskFj9uSNovPCikPba5eX8tjBlW7ryVhkS_mAsc1Qk/s1600/IMG_0675.JPG" imageanchor="1"></a>for a game which focused on the missionary´s knowledge of Preach My Gospel or Predicad Mi Evangelio as it is called in Spanish. The missionaries were divided into their districts of six to eight missionaries and the assistants asked questions regarding specific lessons, commitments, principles and questions that come right out of Preach My Gospel. The missionary who knew the answer had to run and touch a hymnbook held by one of the assistants and then recite it correctly. It wasa lot of fun and amazingly competative. We gave out Super 8 candy bars to the winning district each day. We like using the Super 8 candy bar since there are 8 fundamentals to missionary work. It would not have so great if there had been 9 fundamentals. </div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span lang="ES-CL"> </span>The task for last week and this week in the
mission are the workshops we decided to have for this month’s format of specialized
training. We used this format once
before and the missionaries seemed to enjoy it and benefit from it, so we are
going again.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> As usual we have divided the mission
into seven groups. It is easier (for us)
when we combine the Rancagua, Tupahue, Curico and Talca zones. We have five different sessions which means
small groups of missionaries in each class.
Hopefully that leads to more attention paid to each person and a better
opportunity to learn. President Warne is
teaching about how to help investigators progress to baptism. One assistant is teaching the missionaries to
do a better job of using their agendas, a crucial part of missionary life. The other is training them to improve their
area books which are a record of investigators visited along with addresses,
etc. The couple over the apartments is
teaching a class about cleaning which is a constant challenge. Some missionaries just don’t like to
clean! The nurse and her husband are
covering how to use basic medicines such as Tylenol and ibuprofen,
antidiarrheal and antivomiting. They are
also sharing some basic breathing relaxation techniques which could help
relieve stress; always a positive thing.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> After the sessions we are serving a
simple lunch of turkey/ham wraps, chips, watermelon and chocolate chip cookies. Then everyone divides into their districts
and the assistants supervise a short competition about knowledge of Preach My
Gospel which all enjoy. President
provides “Superochos” as a prize for the winning district, which is a popular
candy bar here in Chile. You could ask
your missionary if he or she likes them.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> It is a good chance for us to see
the missionaries, interact with them and hopefully the training will improve
both their level of missionary work and their outlook on missionary life. </span><o:p></o:p><br />
